Iron Mountain and UrbanBrain Create Program to Support New Internet gTLD Registry Applicants
BOSTON and TOKYO (Aug. 10, 2010) –Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), the information management company, and UrbanBrain Incorporated, an Internet registry services consultancy, today announced a co-referral program to benefit applicants for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), which will expand the domain names on the Internet. Under the terms of this referral program, Iron Mountain will refer prospective gTLD Registry Operators to UrbanBrain for registry services and UrbanBrain will refer prospective Registry Operators to Iron Mountain for data escrow services.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the non-profit organization that oversees the Internet’s domain name system, plans to open its doors to new gTLD applications in the near future. Currently, there are 22 gTLDs in use on the Internet and overseen by ICANN. A top-level domain is what Internet users are accustomed to seeing on the right-most side of a domain name, for example, .com, .net and .org. Iron Mountain currently provides escrow services for the majority of today’s gTLDs and will offer its Registry Data Escrow services for the new gTLDs as well. Hundreds of new gTLDs are expected to be introduced over the next few years, spanning organizations, communities, and new generics.
“The addition of new Internet extensions will increase competition in the domain name market, and consumers will benefit from new and innovative business models,” stated Kevin Saimon, CEO of UrbanBrain. “However, the process of applying for a new gTLD is extremely complex. UrbanBrain’s consulting services will guide new gTLD applicants through the entire process of applying for a new gTLD, as well as running a fully-functioning registry. Our program with Iron Mountain will enable new Registry Operators to ensure their domain is safeguarded with the industry’s premier registry escrow services.”
John Boruvka, vice president of intellectual property management at Iron Mountain Digital, added, “As ICANN rolls out the new gTLD application process, UrbanBrain and Iron Mountain will help new gTLD applicants navigate the strategy, implementation, and protection of their new domains. We’re proud to refer customers to UrbanBrain, and are pleased that UrbanBrain recognizes Iron Mountain’s expertise and market leadership in providing registry data escrow services.”
As the new gTLDs are created, their registries will be required to comply with data escrow requirements similar to those that ICANN maintains for existing gTLDs. This is to ensure the continuity of Domain Name System operations in the event of a physical, technical or business failure of a registry. Iron Mountain was the first company to protect domain name registry data via escrow agreements in 2001. Today, Iron Mountain’s global leadership in information management translates into the most comprehensive and trusted Domain Name Registry Data Escrow Services available.
To help the Internet community further understand the impact of new gTLDs, Iron Mountain has developed a white paper on the topic, titled What’s Next for the New gTLDs?
