Before your Trip
Visas:
Depending on the attendees country, visas can either be obtained both before or on arrival at the Nairobi Airport.
Currency Exchange:
Currency can be exchanged inside the airport upon arrival. ATMs are also available at local banks.
Notes:
It is recommended that attendees bring their immunization cards just in case the they are requested to present proof of immunization.
Upon Arrival
Customs
All arriving passengers are required to clear customs upon arrival in Nairobi. An ICANN Help Desk will be set up inside the international arrivals terminal to aid attendees with any questions regarding visas and to direct attendees through customs.
Transportation to Hotel
Another ICANN Help Desk will be established just outside of the customs gate. Attendees may use this desk to secure a safe taxi for transportation to attendees hotel.
Notes:
- The ICANN Help Desks located at the airport will be available starting on Friday, March 5th.
- The Airport is fairly small and easy to navigate (only one exit for international flights and one customs area which should make finding the ICANN desk a breeze).
- Additional security personal will be posted at the airport.
- Taxi fare should be around USD 20.
- Depending on traffic and distance, the taxi ride could be between 25 – 45 min.
- A list of recommended “safe” taxi companies will be posted on ICANN’s website when it becomes available.
- ICANNs head of security believes that there is no major risk or concern for attendees traveling from the airport to their hotel.
- No special security measures will taken for ICANNs board or constituencies; all security measures are applicable to all those in attendance.
Hotels
Transportation
All hotels recommended by ICANN have a concierge desk where attendees can arrange “safe” taxis for transportation back to the airport or to the conference center. Shuttle buses will be scheduled at each hotel to pickup and drop off passengers at the conference center. A schedule of shuttle bus times will be posted on ICANN’s website when it becomes available. Ample shuttle buses will be scheduled to ensure that each attendee has transportation to and from the conference center.
Notes:
- If an attendee is not staying at an ICANN recommended hotel it may be possible to arrange shuttle service at that particular hotel depending on the number of Attendees at that hotel.
- Additional security will be in the general area of each hotel on the ICANN list.
- All shuttles will have a radio to ensure communication with ICANN security and the Kenyan police.
Conference Center
The conference center is about a 10 to 15 minute walk to most hotels. Participants are advised to walk only during daylight hours. However, even in daylight hours, it is recommended that attendees take the shuttle service or a “safe” taxi when moving to and from the conference center.
Notes:
- Attendees will be screened before entering the conference center.
- All laptops will be tagged to ensure against theft. (a barcode will be placed on the back of the attendees badge)
- Additional police and security, both uniformed and non-uniformed, will be present at the conference center.
Other Issues
All shuttles will be equipped with a radio to keep communication open between the driver, ICANN Security, and the Kenyan Police. In case of a public disturbance, drivers will be notified via radio and attendees will be kept out of the affected area. Generally these types of disturbances (as in the case of the incident that took place on January 15, 2010) take several hours to escalate.
